Graduate Assistantships

The Department of Housing and Residential Life (HRL) hosts 20 (0.5 FTE) graduate teaching assistant positions within Residential Living and Residential Learning. While the specific job duties vary, each of our GTA positions are designed to provide staff with curriculum development and implementation, leadership development; management of a program or building; crisis response and community standards education. 

 

Many of these positions also serve as a community standards educator, include a supervisory component and provides on-call response for the crisis management within the residence halls, Graduate teaching assistants also serves as members of departmental committees for social justice initiatives, alternative spring break, late night programming or curriculum assessment. 


Requirements

All positions require a bachelor's degree and admittance to a graduate program. Some positions may require an early summer start date. 

 

Remuneration

  • Stipend: $1,200/month
  • Room: On-campus apartment, including basic cable and utilities
  • University Dining plan: $1,000/semester and pro-rated for summer term
  • Tuition: In and out-of-state waiver

 

**Every graduate teaching assistant is given an online subscription to the Talking Stick and the ACUHO-I Library to further increase professional development. The Talking Stick is a publication of the Association of College and University Housing Officers-International (ACUHO-I). Additionally GTA's have access to the Chronicle of Higher Education at various locations throughout the department. 

 

  • Assistant Residential Community Educator (ARCE), Single Student Housing

    Position Description:

    Assistant Residential Community Educators and Senior Student Staff are responsible for assisting the Department in developing, coordinating and maintaining a program within their area of responsibility. The A-RCE/SSS should strive to provide a positive intellectual, emotional and social living environment for students. A-RCE’s/SSS’s are always role models. The main responsibility of the A-RCE/SSS is to ensure the day-to-day operation of the area to which they are assigned. The A-RCE position is a one-year appointment and is approximately 20 hours a week, depending on the time of the year.

     

    Length of Assistantship:

    • The assistantship shall be for one (1) year with the opportunity of a second term, if agreeable to both the Graduate Teaching Assistant and Department of Housing and Residential Life

     

    Compensation

    • Stipend: $1,200/month
    • Room: On-campus apartment, including basic cable and utilities
    • University Dining plan: $1,000/semester and pro-rated for summer term
    • Tuition: In and out-of-state waiver

     

    Qualifications

    • Full-time enrolled graduate student (preference given to students in College Student Development program).
    • Some positions may require an early summer start date.
  • Assistant Residential Community Educator (ARCE) Academic Initiatives

    Position Description:

    Assistant Residential Community Educator (ARCE) – Academic Initiatives is responsible for assisting the Department in developing, coordinating, and maintaining a program within their areas of responsibility. This ARCE is responsible for academic initiatives including supporting the Living Learning Programs (LLPs), the Residential Experience and academic probation. The ARCE should strive to provide a positive intellectual, emotional, and social living environment for students. ARCE are always role models. The main responsibility of the ARCE is to ensure the day-to-day operation of the area to which they are assigned. The ARCE position is a one-year appointment and is approximately 20 hours a week, depending on the time of the year.

     

    Primary Responsibilities:

    • Assist the Coordinator of Engagement & Partnerships in managing the Living learning Programs (LLPs) on campus.
    • Assist the Assistant Director of Residential Learning in developing and implementing the Residential Experience.
    • Serve as a liaison between the LLP administrators and relevant housing staff.
    • Perform administrative tasks necessary for LLP administration and Residential Experience implementation.
    • Identify and foster connections with other departments to promote academic growth for residents.
    • Serve as a resource to other graduate assistants and professional staff within the department.

     

    Length of Assistantship:
