Graduate Assistantships

The Hargis Leadership Institute at Oklahoma State University is a dynamic leadership training department with the mission of developing life-giving community leaders. Our team includes President Emeritus Burns Hargis, full-time professional staff, graduate assistants, student workers, and student volunteers. The Institute runs the prestigious President’s Leadership Council and McKnight Scholars Leadership Program as well as several other programs that include retreats, seminars, mentoring, and service.

 

Graduate Assistants with the Hargis Leadership Institute will have opportunities to lead programs; mentor students; engage in research, publications, and presentations; manage budgets; and work with a highly qualified professional staff that will serve as mentors. Graduate Assistants will gain the experience of building a crucial department at a large university where their voice matters.


Requirements

All positions require a bachelor's degree and admittance to a graduate program. Some positions may require an early summer start date. Preference is given to Higher Education master’s students.

 

Compensation

  • Out-of-state portion of tuition may be waived for qualified candidates
  • Up to 12-hours of in-state tuition will be waived

  • 1st Year Compensation Package:
    • $1,300 per month/10 months
    • $1,500 fees stipend ($750/semester)
  • 2nd Year Retention Compensation Package:  
    • $1,400 per month/10 months
    • $3,000 fees stipend ($1,500/semester)
  • Academic Leadership Initiatives

    Roles & Responsibilities:

    • Report to the Assistant Director, President’s Leadership Council.
    • Oversee and administer the Certificate in Ethical Leadership academic program. 
    • Collaborate with each academic college to promote the program.
    • Recruit students to take leadership classes and declare the Certificate in Ethical Leadership.
    • Meet with students to ensure matriculation through the certificate.
    • Create a broad and deep network of campus partners for the Certificate program.
    • Work with the Director and Assistant Director to teach leadership classes. 
    • Work with the Director and Assistant Director to plan and lead study abroad course(s).
    • Lead one assessment per semester for the Hargis Leadership Institute.
    • Meet with supervisor, Assistant Director, President’s Leadership Council, for one-on-ones on a weekly basis (to be established between student and supervisor) for opportunities for professional growth.
    • Engage in research and publication for leadership or higher education journals and/or present at national leadership or higher education conferences.
    • Other duties as assigned.

     

    Qualifications:

    • Admission to a graduate program at Oklahoma State University.
    • Preference given to those pursuing an advanced degree in Higher Education Administration, College Student Development, or other related fields of study.
    • Experience in program development and/or teaching/speaking preferred but not required.
    • Strong written and oral communication skills, as well as strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

     

    Role Specifics:

    • Reports to Assistant Director of Scholarship Programs
    • Type of employment: Part-time
    • Hours per week: 20 hours per week
    • Length of employment: August 1 - May *Friday after Finals week 1 academic year with opportunity for retention incentivized 2nd academic year
    • Out-of-state portion of tuition may be waived for qualified candidates
    • Up to 12-hours of in-state tuition will be waived

  • President's Leadership Council

    Roles & Responsibilities:

    • Oversee the recruitment and selection process for PLC.
    • Coordinate with undergraduate admissions and other campus partners to expand recruitment
    • efforts.
    • Coordinate with employees from the Scholar Recruitment & Group Tours office to meet with
    • prospective students interested in leadership programs.
    • Work with the Assistant Director to teach the PLC class, including adapting curriculum, grading,
    • creating interactive leadership simulations, and bringing in high-profile guest speakers.
    • With the AD, work with the President’s office to coordinate events for PLC.
    • Supervise 4 undergraduate student workers (TLX student workers) and oversee the TLX conferences.
    • Lead one assessment per semester for PLC and/or TLX.
    • Meet with supervisor, Assistant Director for one-on-ones on a weekly basis (to be established
    • between student and supervisor) for opportunities for professional growth.
    • Engage in research and publication for leadership or higher education journals and/or present at national leadership or higher education conferences.
    • Work with the Director and Assistant Director to plan and lead the PLC study abroad course(s).
    • Other duties as assigned.

  • McKnight Scholars Leadership Program (1st Year Experience)

    Roles & Responsibilities:

    • Assist the Director of the Hargis Leadership Institute with program development of the McKnight Scholars Leadership Program
    • Run the McKnight program for 1st year students
    • Assist departmental staff in teaching obligations
    • Lead the scoring of all scholarship applicants and help with the selection process
    • Assist departmental staff with or coordinate individual assessment and research projects
    • Participate in at least one meaningful professional development program each year including but not limited to presenting or volunteering at an approved conference or publishing an article or column in a field publication or academic journal
    • Maintain membership in at least one professional organization
    • Work with fellow GTAs from the Institute to recruit, interview, select, and train future GTAs
    • Work on a 0.5 FTE-basis with selected Focus Area
    • Assist and attend the study abroad course during the summer

    Qualifications:

    • Admission to a graduate-level program at Oklahoma State University
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills as well as the ability to relate to diverse populations are required for this position.
    • Experience in student activities, campus life programs (especially with co-curricular programming), and research activities preferred
    • Preference will be given to those students pursuing advanced degrees in Higher Education Administration, College Student Development, Occupational and Adult Education, Psychology, Counseling, Sociology, Business Administration, or other appropriate field of study.

  • McKnight Scholars Leadership Program (2nd - 4th Year Experience)

    Roles & Responsibilities:

    • Develop the 2nd-4th year McKnight Scholars experience
    • Assist and attend the study abroad course during the summer
    • Utilize social media strategically to connect alumni and current McKnight Scholars
    • Utilize social media strategically to recruit future McKnight Scholars
    • Assist in the scoring of all scholarship applicants and help with the selection process
    • Create space for current McKnight Scholars to lead the program
    • Manage a $500,000 scholarship and programming budget
    • Assist departmental staff with or coordinate individual assessment and research projects
    • Participate in at least one meaningful professional development program each year including but not limited to presenting or volunteering at an approved conference or publishing an article in a field publication or academic journal
    • Maintain membership in at least one professional organization
    • Work with fellow GTAs from Campus Life to recruit, interview, select, and train future GTAs for Campus Life
    • Work on a 0.5 FTE-basis with selected Focus Area
