Graduate Assistantships

Campus Life’s mission is to enhance the student experience through intentional opportunities that promote belonging, engagement and support. Every student should feel a sense of belonging on our campus. Campus Life programs and services strive to foster a welcoming community that celebrates and embraces each student's unique background, experiences and perspectives. Campus Life provides comprehensive support services to address the diverse needs of our student body.

 

We are committed to helping students overcome challenges and achieve their academic and personal goals. Active involvement in campus life is a cornerstone of the student experience. We offer many opportunities for students to engage in extracurricular activities, organizations and events. Whether it's joining a student-led initiative, participating in a student organization, volunteering in the community or serving as a peer mentor, we encourage students to explore their passions and interests beyond the classroom.

 


Requirements

  • Full-time enrolled graduate student (preference given to students in College Student Development program).
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work and collaborate with diverse groups.
  • Excellent communication, customer service and organizational skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects with detail.
  • Demonstrate self-direction, creativity and strategic thinking.
  • Work effectively with individuals and teams. 
  • Exhibit attention to detail and high degree of openness to new approaches and ideas.

Compensation

  • Stipend: $1,500/month (20 hours a week) for 10 months. Summer Positions available but not required.
  • Tuition: In and out-of-state waiver for qualified candidates.
  • Tuition portion of classes listed on Plan of Study waived.
  • $550 funding for parking permit. GTA chooses if they want to purchase a student union parking permit, a campus parking lot permit or not purchase a permit. GTAs receive full funding no matter their parking permit choice.
  • Optional health insurance program.

Reporting Relationship

All Campus Life graduate teaching assistants will be supervised by a professional staff member of Campus Life.

 

Length of Assistantship

All Campus Life assistantships are for 10 months (August to May). Additionally, Campus Life has summer positions available, however they are not necessarily in the same functional areas as the student’s assistantship.

 

 

  • Basic Needs Graduate Teaching Assistant

    We know students struggle when their basic needs aren’t being met. A large population of college students stress about finding their next meal, a place to sleep, or keeping up with hygiene needs. OSU has a wide range of partnerships, pantries and resources to help students meet their basic needs.

     

    The Basic Needs Graduate Assistant works closely with a variety of basic needs initiatives, like Pete’s Pantry and Pete’s Eats, while also given opportunity to advise student committees focused on food and hygiene assistance. This position will work to create awareness on the effects of food insecurity in students and the resources available, coordinate educational programs around food insecurity, and work with community partners to create the most inclusive pantry possible.

     

    Responsibilites

    Market and promote Pete’s Pantry to Oklahoma State University students, faculty and staff through engaging and/or passive programs, class or student organization visits, and social media engagement.

    Work closely with Our Daily Bread and other community partners to inventory food, household and hygiene items. 

    Serve as an advisor for the Basic Needs Committee within the Student Government Association.  

    Coordinate volunteers, campus food drives and procedures relating to the operation of Pete’s Pantry.

    Collaborate on events with Our Daily Bread, such as Mobile Markets, and OSU Night at Our Daily Bread. 

    Manage the Pete’s Eats food recovery program.

    Create and implement awareness programming related to food insecurity.

    Assist students, faculty and staff in obtaining additional campus/community resources if needed.

    Collaborate with Our Daily Bread on managing the storage of dry and perishable goods.

    Evaluate and assess efficiencies of Pete’s Pantry, Our Daily Bread Mobile Market and OSU Night at Our Daily Bread. 

    Create educational materials to assist students in applying for government benefits (SNAP, etc.). 

  • Interfraternity Council & Multicultural Greek Council Graduate Teaching Assistant

    The fraternity and sorority community at Oklahoma State University is composed of almost 50 fraternity and sorority chapters and four governing councils; the Interfraternity Council, Multicultural Greek Council, National Pan-Hellenic Council, and Panhellenic Council. Fraternity and sorority membership offers students a unique opportunity to have a balanced college life with a focus on academic excellence, brotherhood/sisterhood, leadership development, community service and responsible social interaction.

     

    The Graduate Teaching Assistant will help advise two of the governing councils and their executive officers. The GTA will also have the opportunity to help with the advisement and support of other large-scale programs and organizations with the fraternity/sorority community.

     

    Responsibilites

    Assist Fraternity & Sorority Affairs staff with the advisement of the Interfraternity Council & Multicultural Greek Council. Be available to attend all Council meetings and Executive Council meetings.   

    Assist with advisement and facilitation of IFC Summer Recruitment & NPHC Convocation.   

    Assist with the advisement of Fraternity & Sorority Affairs programs including Greek Discovery Day, Council Officers’ Retreat, Chapter Officers’ Retreat, all training, and development, etc.   

    Assist with the advisement of fraternity and sorority organizations, such as Order of Omega, Junior Greek Leadership, etc.   

    Assist with office marketing and social media .

    Campus Life assignments, as necessary.   

    Some weekend and evening responsibilities as needed.

  • Fraternity & Sorority Affairs Programming & Shows Graduate Teaching Assistant  

    The fraternity and sorority community at Oklahoma State University is composed of almost 50 fraternity and sorority chapters and four governing councils; the Interfraternity Council, Multicultural Greek Council, National Pan-Hellenic Council, and Panhellenic Council. Fraternity and sorority membership offers students a unique opportunity to have a balanced college life with a focus on academic excellence, brotherhood/sisterhood, leadership development, community service and responsible social interaction.

     

    The GTA for Programming and Shows will have the opportunity to advise the executive councils and steering committees for the shows as well as work directly with the philanthropic partners for the shows. The GTA will also have the opportunity to help with the advisement and support of other large-scale programs and organizations with the fraternity/sorority community.

     

    Responsibilites

    Serve as the primary advisor to Follies, Varsity Revue, & Spring Sing. Responsibilities include but are not limited to supervising the student leaders involved in each production; ensuring participant eligibility; attending all related meetings (Steering, Walkarounds, Rehearsals, etc.); overseeing the event budgets and contracts; and managing marketing efforts (project requests, proofs, etc.).   

    Oversee and administer the social media presence of the Office of Fraternity & Sorority Affairs.  

    Assist with the advisement of Fraternity & Sorority Affairs programs including Greek Discovery Day, Council Officers’ Retreat, Chapter Officers’ Retreat, all training, and development, etc.   

    Assist with the advisement of fraternity and sorority organizations, such as Order of Omega, Junior Greek Leadership, etc.   

    Campus Life assignments, as necessary.   

    Some weekend and evening responsibilities as needed.  

  • Panhellenic Council & National Pan-Hellenic Council Graduate Teaching Assistant

  • Student Government Association (SGA) Graduate Teaching Assistant

    The Student Government Association's mission is to serve our students at Oklahoma State University making sure each student’s voice is heard by providing student involvement opportunities, fostering a sense of belonging, and encouraging career readiness across our campus community. All three branches of the government provide our students with leadership experiences, programmatic stewardship, and opportunities to expand their critical thinking skills.

     

    The Graduate Teaching Assistant will help advise the Legislative and Judicial branches and assist the coordinator as needed. The GTA will also help with the advisement and support of the largest open-air event, Lights On Stillwater, during the fall semester working directly with the student organizations, campus partners, and community vendors involved in the execution of said event.

     

    Responsibilites

    Assist Student Government Association staff by serving as the primary advisor to the Judicial Branch, Attorney General, Oklahoma Intercollegiate Legislature (O.I.L.), and assist with First Year Representative Council (FRC). 

    Supervising student leaders involved in each organization; ensuring University & SGA bylaw adherence; attending all related meetings that do not conflict with the GTA’s coursework; overseeing the organizational budgets and spending; and managing marketing efforts (project requests, proofs, etc.). 

    Support the newly formed Director of Recruitment as they lead SGA awareness programming across campus, engaging with new stakeholders, and create new initiatives to promote SGA to the campus community as needed. 

    Guide and support the Secretary of Communications as they facilitate the Student Government Association's social media presence.

    Assist Student Government Association staff by working summer Orientation and Enrollment events if available during the summer month (not required).

    Assist with implementation and development of Student Government Association leadership programs including SGA All Branch Retreat, FRC Retreat, and other programs/trainings as needed, etc.

    Assist the Student Body President to develop executive orders, vetoes, or other formal document languages, etc. as needed. 

    Assist the Student Body Vice President with advisement, planning, and production of Lights on Stillwater in the fall semester, etc. 

    Assist with Senate, committee chairpersons, and senators as they develop legislation if needed.

    Assist SGA Assistant at the end of each semester compile the legislation notebook if needed. 

    Campus Life assignments, as necessary. 

    Some weekend and evening responsibilities as needed.

  • Student Volunteer Center Graduate Teaching Assistant  

    The Student Volunteer Center is committed to giving back through purposeful volunteer opportunities. In partnership with the Stillwater community and beyond, the Student Volunteer Center provides and markets opportunities for students to engage in civic engagement and service-learning opportunities to promote student engagement. Such efforts have led to OSU students contributing more than 40,000 community service hours annually benefiting local communities.

     

    The Graduate Teaching Assistant plays an important role in advising the Student Ambassador program and support of various strategic goals and annual objectives of the Student Volunteer Center.

     

    Responsibilities

    Assist the Coordinator in program development and distribution of service opportunities on and off campus. 

    Manage Student Volunteer Center email. 

    Oversee the online reporting system and approve/deny submissions for Student Volunteer Center.  

    Directly advise 6 student Ambassadors: President, Civic Engagement Ambassador, Creating Opportunities for Responsible Development (CORD) Ambassador, Membership Ambassador, Programming Ambassador, or Social Media Ambassador. 

    Assist the Coordinator with budgetary needs for the SVC. 

    Attend SVC Student Ambassador meetings, retreats, and events. 

    Aid the Coordinator with research related to civic engagement and volunteer activities at OSU. 

    Plan one immersive volunteer event or educational initiative per semester.  

    Oversee and execute the Angel Tree initiative each Fall at OSU.  

    Co-Advise the Into the Streets Organization with the Coordinator.  

    Serve on Campus Life, Division of Student Affairs, and/or OSU committees. 

    Attending Campus Life staff meetings.  

  • Student Union Activities Board

    The Student Union Activities Board’s (SUAB) purpose is to stimulate, motivate, educate and involve the student body through creative and fun events. They are a student-led programming board, consisting of 14 student directors. Each student director leads a committee of students to plan, market and host engaging events. SUAB is committed to hosting events which benefit the entirety of the OSU community. SUAB hopes to be recognized by the OSU student body as an environment that is conducive to student involvement, connection and learning through campus activities, service and relationship building.

     

    Responsibilities

    Co-Advise and assist with the functions and events of the Student Union Activities Board (SUAB) Executive Committee to include: 

    Provide one-on-one leadership advising to assigned committee chair people 

    Keep detailed records of events hosted by assigned committees. 

    Attend each event hosted by assigned committees and serve as a professional point of contact during these events. 

    Attend Member and Executive Meetings. 

    Assist with semesterly executive board retreats: curriculum development, presentations, relationship building, etc. 

    Assist the SUAB Coordinator with the necessary functions to keep the Board running on a daily and semesterly basis to include: 

    Keep detailed records of expenditures. 

    Record program evaluation responses and conduct regular assessment of events and program outreach. 

    Process performer contracts. 

    Other duties as assigned. 

    Assist with special events including Fanfare of Lights, the Miss OSU Scholarship Pageant, Summer on the Plaza, and other professional development activities. 


     

    Compensation

    Graduate Teaching Assistants for SUAB receive additional compensation through the Winston Shindell Fellowship with the completion of the following requirements:

    The establishment and maintenance of communication with Mr. Shindell and his family about educational and professional plans 

    The completion of at least three internship experiences within the organizational structure of the Student Union 

    Attendance to the ACUI regional and/or national conferences. 

     

    Qualifications

    Admission to a graduate-level program at Oklahoma State University;

    Excellent oral and written communication skills;

    Ability to relate to diverse populations;

    Experience in student activities, campus life programs (especially with co-curricular programming), and research activities preferred; and

    Preference will be given to those pursuing advanced degrees in Higher Education Administration, College Student Development, Occupational and Adult Education, Psychology, Counseling, Sociology, Business Administration, or other appropriate field of study.

  • Student Support Graduate Teaching Assistant

    Campus Life’s mission is to enhance the student experience through intentional opportunities that promote belonging, engagement and support.

     

    Student connection and involvement on campus positively contribute to a student’s sense of belonging and their collegiate experience. The Student Support GTA serves on the Student Support staff team dedicated to providing support services. This position works to support off-campus students and students who have experience in the foster care system.

     

    The Student Support GTA advises two student organizations, the Off-Campus Student Association (OCSA) and Foster Youth Advocates (FYA).

     

    This position’s primarily focuses on OCSA and FYA initiatives, programs, and student concerns. The GTA will advance our student services to these key constituencies by assisting students in addressing concerns, devising and delivering targeted content that meets their identified needs, promoting the development of student leaders through organizational advisement and assisting with program implementation and assessment.

     

    The GTA will advance our support services for off-campus students and former foster youth under the direction of the Coordinator of Student Support.

     

    Responsibilities

    • Coordinate intentional programs for our identified student constituencies, enhancing their student experiences through belonging, engagement, and support.  
    • Advise both OCSA and FYA through work with their Executive Team and appropriate subcommittees  
    • Coordinate and facilitate OCSA’s annual summer retreat, focusing their organizational goals and objectives and advancing the leadership development of their Executive Team.  
    • Act as a liaison between the Off-Campus Student Association (OCSA), landlords and property management companies, and OSU.  
    • Plan and implement a fall and spring Renter’s Fair in collaboration with OCSA student leadership.  
    • Work alongside FYA Executives to promote the organization as a place of connection, community, and service for OSU students with experience or interest in the foster care system.  
    • Plan service opportunities and partnerships with FYA Executives that positively impact the experiences of our local fostered communities and those who support them.  
    • Advance the competencies of both organizational memberships through purposeful activities and experiences that enhance their growth as Ideal Graduates.  
    • Assist departmental staff with program assessment and improvement 
    • Research off-campus student needs, working to develop appropriate constituent resources and initiatives  
    • Contribute to institutional support development for students with experience in foster care through directed research projects 
    • Respond to phone, email, and social media queries related to both groups 
    • Some weekend and evening responsibilities, as needed
