Graduate Assistantship
A student’s journey to college can be an exciting and challenging time. The New Student Experience Team in OSU’s Undergraduate Recruitment Office, assists students in their search for the “best fit” collegiate home through campus tours and on-campus events and helps them transition to OSU through orientation and enrollment programming and welcome week programming.
As a graduate assistant within this department, you will not only help students find their home at OSU, but also have opportunities to mentor current students through many immersive experiences.
New Student Experience Graduate Assistant
Responsibilities
Position will assist in the strategic planning and execution of prospective student events and programs in two dynamic functional areas of the New Student Experience Team; orientation programs and events & tours. The person selected for this position will assist in the recruitment, hiring and training of student staff, including orientation leaders and campus tour guides. Area specific responsibilities will include:
- Orientation Programs
- Fall/Spring
- Assist with assessment, planning and execution of orientation and welcome programming (Orientation & Enrollment and Cowboy Welcome/Winter Cowboy Welcome)
- Lead weekly meetings with the Orientation Executive Board
- Assist with orientation programs annual benchmarking
- Summer
- Lead weekly meetings with the orientation leader student staff
- Leadership and facilitation of daily operations during orientation programs such as scheduling, preparation, wayfinding, and logistics for programs
- Direct oversight of evening orientation programming.
- Co-supervision of orientation leader student staff
- This position requires onsite overnight stays during evening orientation programs in an on-call capacity
- Fall/Spring
- Events & Tours
- Assist with the strategic planning and execution of daily campus tours.
- Provide leadership in the coordination and execution of all group tours and specialized campus tours (high school groups, GEAR UP groups, and other organizations visiting campus).
- Collaborate with full time staff to schedule campus tour guides for group tours and other special programs throughout the year.
- Provide leadership and facilitation of daily operations during prospective student events.
Qualifications
- Admission to a graduate program at Oklahoma State University with plans to be a full-time enrolled graduate student at the start of the fall semester
- Demonstrates successful leadership qualities in present and past roles
- Demonstrates an understanding of the new student experience and creating a sense of belonging for students within the university community
- Preference will be given to those students pursuing advanced degrees in Higher Education Administration, College Student Development, or other related fields of study
- Excellent oral and written communication skills as well as the ability to relate to a diverse population of students and families is required for this position
- Experience in large scale programming and onboarding programming is preferable but not required
Length of Assistantship
- The assistantship shall be for 24 months - if agreeable to both the graduate assistant and the Office of Undergraduate Recruitment professional staff.
- Must work at least one summer during assistantship, but preferably two. The two summers would be summer prior to assistantship starting and summer between year one and year two.
Compensation
- The compensation for this position will be $1500 per month (20 hours per week) for 10 months (fall/spring). Compensation during summer orientation programming is hourly at $15 per hour up to 40 hours per week.
- Out-of-state and in-state portion of tuition may be waived for qualified candidates.
- Tuition portion of classes listed on plan of study waived.
- Optional health insurance program.
Reporting Relationship
The individual selected as the graduate assistant will directly report to Jennie Hentges, Campus Visit Coordinator with an additional reporting line to Calyn Boyd, Orientation and Enrollment Coordinator. Holistically, the graduate assistant will provide assistance to all staff in the department as needed.
