Sick of Being Homesick?
Tuesday, September 26, 2017
Hey friends! Aren’t you having a wonderful time on this beautifully orange campus? We sure are.
Even though this place is loads of fun, homesickness can sneak up on you, and that’s okay. We wanted to let you in on a few things you can do when you start missing mom’s home-cooked meals and dad’s horrible jokes.
Being homesick is hard, especially when it’s your first time away for a long period of time.
Call home. Friends and family want to hear from you just as much as you want to hear from them. Facetime distant friends for hours and catch up on life.
If you’re still feeling blue after a call and some downtime, here’s a list of things that might help:
Try New Things
Find the best restaurant in town, head to a new boutique or head over to Visit Stillwater to find other fun things to do in America’s Friendliest College Town. Don’t let your bed keep you from experiencing one of the greatest things in life.
Clubs, clubs, clubs
Connect with your fellow cowboys in class by joining clubs on campus. Chances are they feel homesick, too. OSU has over 500 student organizations ranging from major specific clubs to volunteer organizations. There’s a club for everyone. If you can’t find it, start your own!
Pete’s Pet Posse and University Counseling
Find out where and when Pete’s Pet Posse will be on campus. This group of friendly therapy dogs is here to ease your stress when you start to feel lonely. Check out their Facebook page to see what the puppers and doggos are up to!
If the homesickness gets too rough, remember, there is always someone one to talk to. University Counseling Services is always here to help.
Work It Out
Go to the Colvin! Exercise can help relieve some of the stress and anxiety that comes from being homesick.
Try a group fitness class with some friends if you’re not into going to the gym alone.
SIDENOTE: We’ve got even more tips on working out over at Exercise....I thought you said Extra Fries?
Cowboys Have More Fun
Whenever you get homesick, call up the squad and find a fun activity or event around town, or stay in and have a movie night. Bring some popcorn and you’ve got yourself a movie marathon, if that’s what you’re in to.
We know college can be tough. Make sure to keep your head up and always remember…
“Don’t sweat the petty things, and don’t pet the sweaty things.”
