New Year, New Goals

Monday, January 13, 2025

A new semester is here, and with it comes a chance for a fresh start. Whether you're a freshman navigating the exciting (and sometimes overwhelming) college world or a senior counting down the days until graduation, now’s the perfect time to set some goals and kick off the spring semester strong.

Why set goals?

Goals give us direction. They’re like a road map for where you want to go, whether that’s academically, personally or professionally. The best part? You get to decide what success looks like for you.

Man saying "It's about the journey not the destination"

Here’s how to get started:

Reflect on last semester.

Before diving into new goals, take a moment to look back. What worked for you last semester? What didn’t? Are there things you wish you had done differently? Maybe you crushed it in your classes, but let your gym routine slide. Or perhaps you made lots of new friends but didn’t stay on top of your study schedule. Reflecting helps you see where to focus your energy this semester.

Set SMART goals.

You’ve probably heard this before, but it’s worth repeating: Make your goals Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time-bound. SMART goals make it easier to track your progress and keep yourself accountable. Instead of saying, "I want to do better in class," try, "I want to attend every lecture, take notes and review them within 24 hours." Instead of, "I want to get healthier," try, "I’ll go to the Colvin twice a week and meal prep on Sundays."

Balance personal and professional growth.

Your time at OSU is about more than just academics, it’s about building the foundation for your future. Underclassmen: Think about stepping outside your comfort zone. Join a club or organization you’ve been curious about. These experiences can help you discover your passions and build your resume. Upperclassmen: Use this semester to fine-tune your career goals. Update your LinkedIn profile, connect with alumni and apply for internships or jobs.

Don’t forget self-care.

While striving for goals is great, burnout isn’t. Prioritize your well-being by scheduling time for yourself, whether that’s taking a yoga class, grabbing coffee with friends or just binge-watching your favorite show guilt-free.

Celebrate the small wins.

Every step forward is worth celebrating. Did you stick to your study schedule for a week? High five! Managed to wake up for that early-morning workout? You’re crushing it. Recognizing your progress keeps you motivated and reminds you that even small changes add up to big results.

Man saying "let's do this"

This semester is what you make of it. Embrace the highs, learn from the lows and don’t be afraid to adjust your goals. Whether you're preparing for summer internships or just hoping to pass that tough class, remember: You’ve got this!

Here’s to new goals, new habits and a successful spring semester.
