Mental Health During the Holiday Season

Thursday, November 7, 2024

As the holiday season approaches, the excitement and joy often associated with this time can quickly turn into stress and anxiety, especially for college students juggling classes, work and other obligations. Many students face unique challenges during the holidays, and it's essential to prioritize mental health during this busy time. Here are some tips to help you navigate the season with a positive mindset.

Acknowledge Your Feelings

The first step in managing holiday stress is recognizing and accepting your emotions. It’s normal to feel a mix of excitement, nostalgia and even sadness during this time. Whether you’re missing loved ones, feeling overwhelmed by commitments or struggling with academic pressure, acknowledging your feelings is vital. Don't hesitate to talk about your feelings with friends, family or a mental health professional.

Set Realistic Expectations

The holidays often come with high expectations, whether it's about gift-giving, family gatherings or maintaining traditions. This can lead to feelings of inadequacy or disappointment. Instead, aim to set realistic and flexible goals for yourself. Focus on what truly matters to you—whether that's spending time with loved ones, engaging in self-care or simply enjoying some quiet time.

Practice Self-Care

Amid the hustle and bustle, don't forget to take care of yourself. Prioritize self-care activities that recharge your mind and body. This could include:

  • Exercise: Physical activity can boost your mood and reduce stress.
  • Healthy Eating: Nourishing your body with nutritious foods can help you feel better overall.
  • Mindfulness: Techniques such as meditation or deep-breathing exercises can bring a sense of calm amidst the chaos.

Stay Connected

The holiday season can feel isolating, especially if you're away from family or friends. Make an effort to connect with others, whether through video calls, social media or in-person meetups. Being part of a community can provide support and remind you that you're not alone.

Seek Professional Help if Needed

If you find that your mental health struggles are overwhelming, remember that it’s okay to ask for help. OSU offers  mental health resources,  including virtual counseling services through Betterhelp and Togetherall that are available to students. Don’t hesitate to reach out if you need support—there’s no shame in seeking help, even if you aren’t on campus!
