Welcome Home, Cowboys!

To our newest members, welcome to the Cowboy family! We are so glad you have found your home at OSU. Beginning your first year at a new university can be both exciting and overwhelming, so here’s some advice to help you succeed!

What I wish I knew as a first-year student:

  • Prioritize YOU: Your wellbeing is crucial for academic success. Amidst the change of moving to a new place and meeting new people, don’t neglect self-care — whether it’s taking breaks, seeking support when needed or practicing mindfulness.
  • Don't stress over every little error: Understand that one bad grade or mistake doesn’t define your abilities or future success. Learn from them and focus on improvement rather than perfection.
  • Get outside your comfort zone: Take advantage of all the opportunities available on campus. Don’t be afraid to try new things and meet new people — it’s how you’ll grow personally and academically.
  • Build relationships with professors: Professors can be valuable mentors and sources of advice. Take the time to introduce yourself on the first day of class, regularly attend office hours and seek their guidance — they want to see you win!

Tips for success in and out of the classroom:

  • Time management is important! Don’t procrastinate; tackle assignments and study in manageable chunks to avoid last-minute stress and to find ease in balancing school and social obligations!
  • Get involved on campus: Join a club, student organization or  intramural team to meet new people and explore your interests. Getting involved is a perfect way to get to know the campus and your peers. Be sure to check out the  OSU Calendar for other events on campus.
  • Take care of your health: Maintain a balanced diet, exercise regularly and prioritize getting enough sleep to support your physical and mental well-being. Grab some of your new friends and go for a walk or take a trip to the  Colvin Recreation Center. You’ll have the best time!
  • Develop good study habits: Find a quiet and comfortable place to study regularly and don’t hesitate to seek help from professors, teaching assistants or tutoring services if you’re struggling with a subject.  Edmond Low Library is always a great study spot!
  • Familiarize yourself with Student Support Resources: OSU wants you to succeed! There are a variety of  support services available to new and existing students as you navigate your time in college. From mental health to academic support, OSU has it all.
