Get Paid

Friday, September 21, 2018

We’ve all been there. When fast food sounds like a feast and two-ply toilet paper might seem like a luxury. Yes, we are talking about being broke.

#$AintNoThang isn’t a thing in college.

There are a lot of costs you might not have accounted for when you thought about college, and being on your own makes you appreciate every home-cooked meal you’ve ever had. #ThanksMom

Here it is. Yep, we’re sayin’ it: Get a J-O-B!

It’s not as scary as it sounds.

Even if you don’t need the money … wait … kidding!

Everyone needs money. There are lots of benefits to working as a student employee.

#DYK:Students who work have a higher GPA and retention rate on average than those who don’t? It’s also a great place to make friends with different interests from yours. You and your roommate might be #besties now, but trust us, this will come in handy.

OSU and Stillwater have numerous options for student employment. This guide should help find the right fit for any student.

Here’s what you need to know:

One & Done

The Student Union has an employment application for jobs in the union as well as University Dining jobs. Just fill it out once and you’ve applied for all of them. It’s never been easier.

The Hire System is another fantastic resource for job searching. During the last 12 months, 346 off-campus and 320 on-campus part-time jobs have gone through the office. They also have contact information for local businesses and campus departments available for students to view. Check them out!

All students are eligible to work on campus, not just those with Work Study.

Don’t Overdo It

Plan to work about 15-20 hours a week on campus. It’s really not that much, but do what’s best for your school schedule. HINT: Class work comes first. Don’t take on more than you can handle or skip class because money sounds better.

Surf the Web

Websites such as Indeed.com and Glassdoor.com can help students who prefer to work off campus with the search. The earlier you apply, the better — jobs in a college town go quickly.

Think Ahead

Many students choose jobs and internships during school that will prepare them for their future careers. Don’t hesitate to ask department heads or advisers about employment opportunities relating to specific majors.

Clean It Up

If you’ve applied for jobs and aren’t having any luck, maybe your résumé and cover letter aren’t as strong as you think. OSU Career Services has all kinds of resources to help:

  • The Hire System has a list of available jobs for students as well as resources for resume, cover letter, business cards and interview help.
  • Not sure where to start? Take a career assessment to find your strengths and learn what types of jobs best fit your personality.
  • Career fairs are great for students to explore part-time and full-time employment opportunities. If you go to these, make sure to NETWORK!

Now’s your time! Take full advantage of the resources and connections!

What types of jobs have you found? Let us know on social media using using #iamokstate. See ya later, Cowboys!
