Feeling Homesick

Monday, August 26, 2024

Leaving home for college is an exciting journey filled with new experiences and opportunities for personal growth. However, along with the thrill of independence comes a common challenge: homesickness.

If you're a new or returning student missing the familiarity of home, you're not alone. Homesickness is a natural feeling, but it doesn't have to define your college experience. Here are some strategies to help you embrace your time as a Cowboy and conquer homesickness:

Connect with the OSU community:

One of the best ways to combat homesickness is by building a new support network. Attend events, join clubs or student organizations that interest you, and participate in campus activities. Taking part in these opportunities not only fosters new relationships, but can also help you feel more integrated into university life.

Explore Stillwater:

Get to know your surroundings!offers many opportunities for exploration. Whether it's walking around Boomer Lake, exploring downtown Stillwater's shops and restaurants, or attending an OSU sporting event, discovering your new environment can make it feel more like home.

Create a comfortable living space:

Your housing or living situation in college is your sanctuary away from home. Personalize your space with photos, decorations and items that remind you of home. Having a cozy and familiar environment can ease feelings of homesickness and make you feel more settled.

Stay active and engaged:

Keeping busy with academics, hobbies and extracurricular activities not only helps you stay focused but also reduces feelings of homesickness. Set goals for yourself — whether academic, fitness-related or personal — and work towards achieving them. A sense of accomplishment and purpose can significantly boost your overall well-being.

Seek Support:

It's okay to feel homesick, and it's okay to ask for help! OSU offers various counseling and support services for students experiencing homesickness or other challenges. Don't hesitate to reach out and take advantage of these resources. Need the support of a furry friend? OSU has you covered. Pete’s Pet Posse was established in 2013 with nationally certified pet therapy teams. Dozens of pups make regular appearances through the year.

Transitioning to college life is a journey filled with growth, learning and new beginnings. While homesickness may linger from time to time, remember that it's a temporary feeling that can be overcome with time. I encourage you to embrace your college years and make the most of your time at OSU! Go Pokes!
