Heading Home for the Holidays
Friday, December 6, 2024
Winter break is around the corner, and we know many of you are eagerly (or nervously) preparing to pack up and head home for the holidays. While this time of the year is full of joy and celebration, it can also bring its fair share of stress—from saying goodbye to your Stillwater friends to navigating family dynamics. Don’t worry, though! We’ve got some tips to help you make the most of your holiday season while staying sane.
Before You Leave Stillwater
Before you head out, make sure you’ve checked these essentials off your list:
- Unplug Appliances and Electronics: Save energy and avoid fire hazards by unplugging chargers, coffee makers and other small appliances.
- Keep the Heat On: Set your thermostat to AUTO, no lower than 65 degrees, to prevent freezing temperatures inside.
- Turn Off the Lights: Save energy and prolong the life of your lightbulbs.
- Clean Out Your Fridge: Don’t leave food behind to rot. Future you will thank you.
- Take Out the Trash: Avoid a smelly surprise when you return by taking out all the garbage.
- Lock Up: Double-check all windows and doors before you leave.
Managing Holiday Stress
Being home for the holidays can be wonderful, but it can also stir up old memories, highlight changes or even make you miss the routines of campus life. Here’s how to navigate:
- Make Time for Yourself
Yes, family events are important, but so are you. Take a moment to recharge. Whether it’s going for a walk, journaling or curling up with a good book. Your mental health matters, and this is your break too!
- Change Your Perspective
Turn those awkward family dinners into opportunities. Suggest something new: a holiday movie night, ice skating or baking cookies together. Sometimes all it takes is a fresh activity to break the monotony and make everyone smile.
- Be Flexible with Plans
Balancing time between family, hometown friends and relaxation can be tricky. Don’t overcommit! Communicate your availability and set boundaries to ensure you’re not stretching yourself too thin.

Enjoy Your Break, Cowboys!
The holidays are a time for reflection, connection and recharging. While you’re making memories at home, don’t forget to take care of yourself. Whether it’s trying a new tradition, revisiting old ones or just soaking up the downtime, make this break your own.
We’ll miss you while you’re away, but we’ll be here waiting to welcome you back in the spring.
Happy holidays, and Go Pokes!
