Thanksgiving is just around the corner! Whether you're gearing up for a long journey back to your hometown or celebrating in Stillwater, the holiday season is upon us.

Not everyone can afford the time or the gas money to make the trek home, especially with winter break just around the corner. But don’t worry—you don’t have to miss out on the holiday fun. If you're staying in Stillwater or nearby, here are some ideas on ways to spend your Thanksgiving here in town:

Host a “Friendsgiving”

Invite your friends who are sticking around and create your own holiday tradition. A potluck-style meal keeps things affordable and allows everyone to contribute something special.

Enjoy a meal with the Stillwater community

If you’d rather not cook, there’s always the Annual Stillwater Community Thanksgiving Lunch at First United Methodist Church. It’s free to attend and runs from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day. Enjoy a delicious Thanksgiving meal with the Stillwater community!

Stay on track with your goals

Amid all the holiday food and festivities, don’t forget that finals are just around the corner. If you have free time during your break, use it to get ahead on studying or knock out some homework. A little productivity now can set you up for success when school begins again and finals week approaches.

Give thanks and give back

Thanksgiving isn’t just about the food—it’s about gratitude. As you head into the holiday, take a moment to reflect on all the things you’re thankful for. Whether you’re celebrating with family, friends or roommates, it’s important to acknowledge the people who make your life better.

And while you're in a grateful mood, remember there are plenty of ways to give back this holiday season. Many shelters and food banks experience an uptick in need during the holidays. Consider donating food, supplies or your time.

Here are a few local organizations that would love your help:

You’ll be glad you did—and so will those in need.
