Preparing for What’s Next
Graduation is a major milestone, marking both an ending and a new beginning. As exciting as it is to celebrate everything you've accomplished at OSU, it's also normal to feel uncertain about what comes next. Whether you're entering the workforce, heading to grad school or taking time to figure things out, this transition brings opportunities and challenges. Here’s how to navigate it with confidence and clarity.

Sharpen Your Resume
Before you start applying to jobs or grad programs, take time to polish your resume. Focus on the experiences that matter most, and tailor it to the specific role or industry you're interested in. Your resume should not exceed one page, and every word should serve a purpose. Use action verbs, avoid fluff and highlight results when you can. For example, instead of saying you “helped plan events,” say you “coordinated three events with over 200 attendees.” OSU Career Services offers free resources and resume reviews, which are worth taking advantage of before you hit submit.
Practice Soft Skills
Employers expect you to know the basics of your field, but it’s often soft skills, like communication, time management and adaptability, that set you apart. These are qualities you've already practiced during your time at OSU: managing group projects, balancing commitments, navigating challenges, etc. Now is the time to recognize them, refine them and be able to talk about them in interviews or networking conversations.

Be Prepared for Interviews
Interview prep can make all the difference. Research the company, understand the role
and be ready to explain why you’re a good fit. Practice common interview questions,
especially those about your experiences, problem-solving abilities and career goals.
And remember, interviews are a two-way street—ask questions that help you learn more
about the company’s culture and expectations. If you’re nervous, mock interviews are available through Career Services and can help you feel more confident.
You got this.
It’s OK not to have everything figured out. Many people take time to find their footing after graduation and plans often shift. Try to keep an open mind when different opportunities arise. Internships, temporary roles and/or experiences that might not be your “dream job” could still help you build skills and expand your network. Growth can happen in unexpected places.
You don’t have to have all the answers right now. What matters most is that you keep learning, stay connected and take small, intentional steps toward your goals—even if those goals change along the way. You've already accomplished so much at OSU. Wherever you go from here, you’re more prepared than you think.
