Hargis Leadership Institute Graduate Assistantships

The Hargis Leadership Institute at Oklahoma State University is a dynamic leadership training department with the mission of developing life-giving community leaders. Our team includes President Emeritus Burns Hargis, full-time professional staff, graduate assistants, student workers, and student volunteers. The Institute runs the prestigious President’s Leadership Council and McKnight Scholars Leadership Program as well as several other programs that include retreats, seminars, mentoring, and service.

 

Graduate Assistants with the Hargis Leadership Institute will have opportunities to lead programs; mentor students; engage in research, publications, and presentations; manage budgets; and work with a highly qualified professional staff that will serve as mentors. Graduate Assistants will gain the experience of building a crucial department at a large university where their voice matters.


Requirements

All positions require a bachelor's degree and admittance to a graduate program. Some positions may require an early summer start date. Preference is given to Higher Education master’s students.

 

Remuneration

  • Stipend: $1,200/month
  • Tuition: In and out-of-state waiver
  • $500/semester scholarship to assist with student fees
  • Parking permit to the Student Union garage

  • Leadership Programs

    Responsibilities:

    • Meet with supervisor, Coordinator of Leadership Programs, for one-on-ones on a weekly basis (to be established between student and supervisor) for check-ins and opportunities for personal and professional growth.
    • Oversee the #LeadOrange social media campaign, including: Marketing and sharing nomination form to accrue nominations from students, Faculty, and Staff; Managing incoming nominations; Communicating with nominees to host nominee interviews; and, Collaborating with the marketing student employee to ensure social media posts are made.
    • Under supervision of the Coordinator of Leadership Programs, serve as the point person for the annual President’s Celebration of Leadership by managing pre-program logistics and day-of responsibilities, including: Room and catering reservations; Facilities management reservations; Communication to #LeadOrange nominees and winners; Coordinate communication and invitations to campus partners; and, Purchase awards and create Certificates.
    • Create curriculum for and facilitate the workshop series, Leadership Development Series
    • Work closely with the Director of Hargis Leadership Institute to collaborate and serve as the GTA for the Introduction to Leadership course, assisting with curriculum development, teaching lessons, and overseeing student assignments.
    • Support Coordinator of Leadership Programs and Undergraduate Student Director of Leadership Programs in execution of other co-curricular leadership programs.
    • Coordinate with employees from the Scholar Recruitment & Group Tours office to meet with prospective students interested in leadership programs.
    • As requested, assist with assessments for programs.
    • Other duties as assigned.

     

    Qualifications:

    • Admission to a graduate program at Oklahoma State University.
    • Preference given to those pursuing an advanced degree in Higher Education Administration, College
      Student Development, or other related fields of study.
    • Experience in program development/event planning preferred but not required.
    • Strong written and oral communication skills, as well as strong organizational skills and attention to
      detail.

     

    Role Specifics:

    • Type of employment: Part-time
    • Length of employment: August 1 - May *Friday after Finals week // 2 consecutive academic years
    • Hours per week: 20 hours per week
    • Compensation: Stipend of $1,200 per month, to be dispersed once a month
  • Academic Leadership Initiatives

    Responsibilities:

    • Report to the Assistant Director, President’s Leadership Council.
    • Oversee and administer the Certificate in Ethical Leadership academic program. 
    • Collaborate with each academic college to promote the program.
    • Recruit students to take leadership classes and declare the Certificate in Ethical Leadership.
    • Meet with students to ensure matriculation through the certificate.
    • Create a broad and deep network of campus partners for the Certificate program.
    • Work with the Director and Assistant Director to teach leadership classes. 
    • Work with the Director and Assistant Director to plan and lead study abroad course(s).
    • Lead one assessment per semester for the Hargis Leadership Institute.
    • Meet with supervisor, Assistant Director, President’s Leadership Council, for one-on-ones on a weekly basis (to be established between student and supervisor) for opportunities for professional growth.
    • Engage in research and publication for leadership or higher education journals and/or present at national leadership or higher education conferences.
    • Other duties as assigned.

     

    Qualifications:

    • Admission to a graduate program at Oklahoma State University.
    • Preference given to those pursuing an advanced degree in Higher Education Administration, College
      Student Development, or other related fields of study.
    • Experience in program development and/or teaching/speaking preferred but not required.
    • Strong written and oral communication skills, as well as strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

  • President's Leadership Council

    Responsibilities:

    • Oversee the recruitment and selection process for PLC. 
    • Coordinate with undergraduate admissions and other campus partners to expand recruitment efforts.
    • Coordinate with employees from the Scholar Recruitment & Group Tours office to meet with prospective students interested in leadership programs.
    • Work with the Assistant Director to teach the PLC class, including adapting curriculum, grading, creating interactive leadership simulations, and bringing in high-profile guest speakers. 
    • With the AD, work with the President’s office to coordinate events for PLC.
    • Work with the Director and Assistant Director to plan and lead the PLC study abroad course(s).
    • Supervise 4 undergraduate student workers (TLX student workers) and oversee the TLX conferences.
    • Lead one assessment per semester for PLC and/or TLX.
    • Meet with supervisor, Assistant Director, President’s Leadership Council, for one-on-ones on a weekly basis (to be established between student and supervisor) for opportunities for professional growth.
    • Engage in research and publication for leadership or higher education journals and/or present at national leadership or higher education conferences.
    • Other duties as assigned.
