Freshman year is full of obstacles. Between moving away from home and learning how to navigate campus, your roommate might be the last of your worries.
Living with someone is not easy. Sharing a room requires patience, whether its a complete stranger or your best friend from high school.
After a couple weeks, you’ll learn their quirky ways and even have their schedule memorized so you know the optimal napping time.
Until then, take a look at the tips below to help make your life a little bit easier.
Respect their space and things
Know when to leave them alone. Maybe they had a bad day or don’t feel well. Pay attention to their mood and tone to keep the peace.
Ask before you borrow anything: Just because you share a room does not mean you have free game on anything in it.
Don’t steal: Using their toothpaste or laundry detergent repeatedly is not cool.
Clean up after yourself
For your sake and theirs, keep up with your trash. No one wants to sleep next to their old McDonald’s bag and wake up in a stinky room.
Don’t bottle up your emotions! If something needs to be said, just say it!
You’re on your own now, it’s time to be mature and express your feelings.
Send a text if you’re having friends over
Just do it. It’s the courteous thing to do and you know it. Don’t blindside them when they walk out of the shower to a room filled with people. If your roommate is sick or trying to study for a test, you can always hang out at the Colvin, Union or library!
Do you like trying to study, sleep or watch a show with constant noise in the background?
We didn’t think so.
PROTIP: The Student Union University Store has a variety of headphones to choose from if you’re in need of a new pair.
