In 1990, President George H. W. Bush declared November Native American Heritage month. During this time, the country pays tribute and celebrates the ancestry and traditions of Native Americans. This month also helps educate the public about the tribes and the challenges Native people have faced over the years.

Oklahoma State’s Center for Sovereign Nations and the Native American Student Association will be hosting events all month. Check out the list below to find one you can attend!

Native students from across the state will gather to watch the OSU Cowboy Basketball game including a special halftime show to celebrate Native American Heritage Month!

 

The center was made possible by the Chickasaw Nation and OSU in 2015 and serves students from 39 sovereign nations in Oklahoma. The center connects OSU faculty, staff, students, tribal nations and alumni to work together to promote sovereignty, student success and partnerships.

A three-fold mission guides the center:

• Sovereignty: Promote understanding, respect and exercise of tribal sovereignty
• Students: Promote American Indian student success and graduation
• Partnerships: Increase the number and quality of partnerships between OSU and the 39 federally recognized tribal nations in Oklahoma
