What You Need to Know Before Going Home for the Holiday

Tuesday, November 17, 2020

Hey Cowboys, we’re coming to that point in the semester when things start to get a little stressful. Projects are ramping up and final exams are getting closer, but don’t worry, we have good news: Fall break begins Nov. 23-25 and Thanksgiving break is Nov. 26-27. In other exciting words, you get a whole week off!

We know you’re excited for the break, and if you’re traveling home for the holidays, there are things you can do to make sure you and everyone around you stays safe.

1. Take a COVID-19 test before you leave

A test helps you keep your family safe. OSU offers free testing for students and staff, just make an  appointment, show up, and you’re good to go. If you test positive, consider staying put and quarantining here, rather than taking COVID-19 home to your family members. If you don’t test positive, still take precautions with your family just in case. Remember, a test is only a moment in time and you could become infected after your test result comes back.

2. Know the COVID-19 count where you're going

Keep an eye on the positive case count in the areas you are traveling to and from and factor it in when planning gatherings. The CDC has some great resources for hosting and attending holiday gatherings. If the weather permits, stay outside as much as possible.

3. If you're flying home

Be safe while traveling and keep your mask on and hand sanitizer with you. Wash your hands after touching things, and avoid others as much as you reasonably can.

Now, we know that’s a lot, and it’s really no fun to have to take all these precautions just to go home. Just remember: this won’t last forever and keeping yourself and everyone around you safe is worth it.

Mental Health

With the possibility of missing out on some of your favorite holiday traditions, it’s perfectly normal to feel down or depressed. If you, or someone you know if struggling, let someone know! Mental health resources are still available to you even while you’re away from campus!

Stay connected, even from home

There are many ways to stay connected to campus virtually. Make sure you:

  1. Check the Student Bulletin email that is sent every Tuesday.
  2. Check out the OSU events  calendar.
  3. Follow OSU on social media to stay up-to-date on campus news.

Tutoring is still available, even when classes are online

We know virtual learning can be a challenge. There is an abundance of virtual academic resources available to help you through it! OSU offers virtual tutoring through the LASSO center, Math Learning Success Center, the OSU Writing Center and more. Be sure to check all the available resources here.

Finish the semester strong

  1. Review course syllabi and identify due dates for upcoming assignments.
  2. Create a schedule for all assignments and stick to it!
  3. Prioritize your assignments based on deadlines and allow yourself to focus on each task the best you can.
  4. Find a quiet place to study and get your work done.
  5. Take a break! Get outside, go to the gym, go for a walk – don’t forget to take care of yourself.

Finals week is Dec. 7-11 (so close), but then you get a big break until Jan. 19 when spring classes start!

Now, that’s a lot of information to take in. We’re proud of everything you have accomplished so far this semester and for persevering through uncertain times. Have a safe break and Go Pokes! You’ve got this, Cowboys!
